In short: Lençóis Maranhenses is best visited when the rainwater lagoons are full, roughly May to September, with a peak usually around June to August. Fly into São Luís, then travel about 250 km by road to Barreirinhas or Santo Amaro. You can only enter the dunes with an ICMBio-accredited driver or guide, there is no national park entrance fee, and you should plan at least three nights.

What makes Lençóis Maranhenses different

Lençóis Maranhenses National Park, on the coast of Maranhão state in northeastern Brazil, is a field of white dunes where seasonal rain collects in thousands of freshwater lagoons. UNESCO added it to the World Heritage List in 2024 (Decision 46 COM 8B.6). The lagoons are not permanent: they fill in the rainy season and shrink or disappear in the dry months, which is why timing matters more here than almost anywhere else in Brazil.

The park has also become much busier. According to the federal park agency ICMBio, it received more than 650,000 visitors in 2025, over 400% more than in 2019, as reported by O Imparcial in January 2026. ICMBio is studying a daily visitor limit for each area. No cap had been announced at the time of writing, but it is worth checking before you book.

💧

The lagoons are seasonal

They exist only after the rains. Plan your dates first, then your route.

🚙

You can’t drive in yourself

Only ICMBio-accredited 4×4 vehicles, drivers and guides can take visitors into the park.

📍

Three main bases

Barreirinhas for convenience, Atins for a quiet village, Santo Amaro for being closest to the dunes.

🎫

No park ticket

ICMBio charges no entrance fee. You pay for the tour, and some towns charge a local tourism fee.

When to visit: lagoon season month by month

The rainy season in this part of Maranhão usually runs from about February to May. The lagoons reach their fullest just after it, roughly May or June to September, then shrink from October. By around November many of them are low or dry until the next rains. The cycle shifts from year to year, and in drier years some lagoons never fill completely.

PeriodWhat to expectWho it suits
February to AprilRain showers; lagoons start to fill, often only partlyFlexible travelers who don’t mind rain and want fewer crowds
May to JuneRains ease; lagoons near their fullestThe best balance of water and weather for many visitors
July to AugustUsually full lagoons and dry weather; Brazilian school holidays in JulyPeak photos, but the busiest roads and tours (local press reported traffic jams near Santo Amaro on July 12, 2026)
SeptemberLagoons still good in most years, starting to dropA good late-season option
October to JanuaryLagoons shrinking, many low or dryDune landscapes, the river and the coast rather than swimming in the lagoons

Seasonal pattern based on recurring local reports; it is not a forecast. Before you book, ask your tour operator in Barreirinhas or Santo Amaro how full the lagoons are that year.

Visiting from December to March? That is high season for travelers from North America and Europe, but low lagoon season. The dunes are still striking. Set your expectations by saying “dunes with some lagoons”, or combine the trip with the river and the coast around Atins.

How to get to Lençóis Maranhenses

The main gateway is São Luís airport (SLZ), the capital of Maranhão, with domestic flights from Brazil’s main hubs. ICMBio also lists Parnaíba airport (PHB) in Piauí, which works if you combine the park with the coastal route known as the Rota das Emoções. From São Luís you have four options.

RouteTime and distanceGood to know
Rental car to BarreirinhasAbout 249 km from SLZ airport via BR-135 and BR-402; roughly 3.5 to 4 hoursNo 4×4 needed to reach town. Some stretches of BR-402 have potholes and animals on the road, so drive by day. You still can’t drive into the park.
Rental car to Santo AmaroAbout 226 km from SLZ airport; roughly 3.5 hoursThe last 33 km on MA-320 were reported in very poor condition in 2025. Ask locally before you go.
Intercity bus to BarreirinhasAround 4 to 4.5 hours from São Luís bus stationCompanies listed on booking sites include Expresso Guanabara and Cisne Branco, with a few departures a day. The bus station is about 7 km from central São Luís.
Shared van or private transferSimilar to drivingAgencies and inns in Barreirinhas sell van seats from São Luís. A private transfer costs more but goes door to door.

Road distances and times come from route reports by travelers who drove them in August–October 2025 and from bus listings checked in October 2026. Schedules change, so confirm with the operator.

Getting to Atins

Atins is a village at the mouth of the Preguiças River, reached from Barreirinhas. The fastest option is a direct speedboat, about 50 minutes (one traveler paid R$100 in an account updated in January 2026). The scenic option is the Preguiças River boat tour, more than five hours with stops at Vassouras, Mandacaru and Caburé, ending at Atins. There are also 4×4 pick-ups, about two hours over sand and streams, which are cheaper but rough. Boats arrive at Atins port, which is too far to walk with luggage on sand, so arrange a pick-up with your inn.

Can I do it as a day trip from São Luís?

Agencies sell day trips, but you would spend about seven to eight hours on the road for a half-day in the dunes. We don’t recommend it unless you have no other option. One night in Barreirinhas makes a big difference.

Where to stay: Barreirinhas vs Atins vs Santo Amaro

BaseBest forTrade-offs
BarreirinhasFirst-timers, short trips, travelers arriving by bus. It is the largest town, with the widest choice of agencies, restaurants and inns, and easy access to the Lagoa Azul and Lagoa Bonita circuits.Busier and more urban. The dunes are a 4×4 ride away, not on your doorstep.
AtinsTravelers who want a small, slower village between the river, the sea and the dunes.Reached only by boat or 4×4 from Barreirinhas. Sand streets and fewer services.
Santo AmaroBeing as close as possible to the dunes: ICMBio says the town is less than 2 km from the park, and the Andorinha circuit can be reached on foot or by accredited vehicle.Last stretch of road in poor condition; smaller choice of services.

How we compare bases: distance to the dunes and the circuits ICMBio lists for each town, how you get there, and the services available. We don’t rank individual hotels in this guide.

The main lagoon circuits

ICMBio publishes the official circuits for each access town (Barreirinhas, Santo Amaro). Which lagoons hold water changes with rain, wind and moving dunes, so treat the names below as a guide rather than a promise.

1 Lagoa Azul (from Barreirinhas)

A half-day 4×4 trip, usually in the morning, with a stop for a swim. Nearby lagoons such as Lagoa da Preguiça, Lagoa da Esmeralda and Lagoa do Peixe appear or disappear depending on the year.

2 Lagoa Bonita (from Barreirinhas)

A 4×4 ride on sand roads to a wooden staircase that climbs onto the dunes, with Lagoa do Clone, Lagoa do Descanso and Lagoa Bonita.

3 Andorinha and Lagoa da Gaivota (from Santo Amaro)

The circuit closest to town, on the edge of the national park and the municipal park. It includes the Andorinha, Maçarico and Gaivota lagoons, reached by accredited vehicle or on foot.

4 Betânia and Lagoa da América (from Santo Amaro)

Betânia is a community inside the park on the Rio Alegre, with restaurants and hammock areas. Lagoa da América is reached only by boat from the Santo Amaro port, across the Rio Alegre and Lago de Santo Amaro.

5 Lagoas Emendadas (from Santo Amaro)

Two lagoons that join when the water is high. Expect a long walk with dune climbs from the parking area; it is usually visited in the afternoon for sunset.

6 The Lençóis trek

Multi-day crossings of the dunes start at Canto dos Lençóis and end in Santo Amaro, with water points only at the villages of Baixa Grande and Queimada dos Britos. ICMBio recommends carrying at least 3 liters of water per person per day (visitor guidelines). Do it only with an accredited guide.

Park rules and fees

  • No national park fee. ICMBio charges no entrance fee; agencies and operators charge for their services.
  • Accredited providers only. Vehicles, drivers and guides need ICMBio accreditation and carry a badge. Ask to see it when you book.
  • No private vehicles in the park. Private cars, motorbikes, buggies, quads and UTVs can’t enter, and no motor vehicle may drive on the open dune field.
  • Prohibited: alcohol, fires and barbecues, and pets.
  • Local fees and vouchers. Santo Amaro introduced a municipal tourism fee of R$10 per visitor in September 2023. Local press in July 2026 reported that entry requires a voucher issued through the municipalities. Ask your operator whether it is included.
  • Bring water, sunscreen and insect repellent. There is little shade on the dunes.

Checked on October 31, 2026: ICMBio is developing a visitor cap per area, and nothing has been announced yet. Check the official park page before you travel.

A 4-day Lençóis Maranhenses itinerary

Day 1 — São Luís to Barreirinhas

Morning: Fly into São Luís and drive, take the bus or a transfer to Barreirinhas (about 4 hours).

Afternoon: Settle in and book your circuits with an accredited agency for the next two days.

Tip: Leave São Luís by early afternoon so you don’t drive BR-402 after dark.

Day 2 — Lagoa Azul and Lagoa Bonita

Morning: Lagoa Azul circuit, which usually runs in the morning.

Afternoon: Lagoa Bonita circuit. Ask whether your tour stays on the dunes for sunset.

Tip: If it rains, swap the order. Tours run in light rain, but sunset views depend on the sky.

Day 3 — Preguiças River to Atins

Morning: Preguiças River boat tour with stops at Vassouras, Mandacaru and Caburé, ending in Atins.

Afternoon: Arrive in Atins and walk the village and beach.

Tip: If you’re short on time, take the direct speedboat instead (about 50 minutes).

Day 4 — Dunes from Atins, then back

Morning: Dunes and lagoons from Atins with an accredited guide.

Afternoon: Return to Barreirinhas and then to São Luís, or stay another night.

Tip: With a fifth day, add Santo Amaro for Lagoa da Gaivota and Betânia.

Practical tips

Money and payments

Brazil runs on cards and Pix, the instant payment system. Many small providers in villages like Atins prefer cash or Pix, which can be hard for visitors to use without a Brazilian bank account or a compatible app. Carry some reais in cash for boats, local fees and tips, and withdraw it in São Luís or Barreirinhas.

Mobile data

Coverage drops in the dunes and on the river. An eSIM set up before you land lets you message your agency and use maps in town.

What to wear and pack

Light clothes, a hat, sunglasses, reef-safe sunscreen and a reusable water bottle. You’ll often walk barefoot on the sand, which gets hot in the middle of the day.

Language

Outside hotels, many drivers and boat operators speak only Portuguese. Booking through an agency that confirms details in writing (WhatsApp is the norm) avoids surprises.
